SUCCESS STORIES

Daniel Lilema – Lusaka/Zambia

INSTALLED:
August 2005 for annual 5-day Word of Life Church 600-person conference at HQ Lusaka (only 4 of 10 toilets installed in time) … replacement for indescribably smelly, fly-ridden & hazardous pit toilets… so bad that delegates the previous year were forced to use nearby maize fields as a toilet.

REACTION AFTER 3 WEEKS:
“What a difference… Toilets working very well…Best by far…Many people, churches & organizations admiring them…We want more…Your toilet is fantastic.”

15 YEARS LATER:
“All ten toilets working well…Besides staff and conference delegates, passers-by also use them…We need them in both towns and rural areas across Zambia…We’re moving 3 of the toilets from HQ to Livingston for an upcoming conference in August 2020.”

Sam Mjwara – Kwa Madlala/KZN South Africa

INSTALLED:
May 2003 at Sam and Cathrina Mjwara’s residence in Kwa Madlala

REACTION AFTER 3 WEEKS:
“I love this toilet…there’s no smell… hardly any flies because I keep the pedestal clean… I don’t have to worry about my grandchildren falling in the pit… it’s a lovely toilet!”

12 YEARS LATER:
“It’s a wonderful toilet…Still working well…The free VIPs the government are installing start smelling after the first month of use…Cathrina would have been pleased to hear what you’re trying to do for people in Africa!”

Subusiso Ntuli – Sweetwaters/KZN South Africa

INSTALLED:
May 2005 at Councilor Sibusiso Ntuli’s residence in Sweetwaters Ward 2

REACTION AFTER 3 WEEKS:
“I often read reports or the newspaper in the toilet for peace and quiet…My family and I are delighted with this kind of toilet…Huge improvement on the pit toilets in general use in the area.”

12 YEARS LATER:
“It’s a great toilet! I still read my papers in there at times…My extended family and visitors have used it for many years…It’s safe, clean & smell-free…My community want sustainable toilets that restore dignity…I foresee an unstoppable community-driven roll-out…It’s a vast improvement on the VIPs in the area that smell…They’re virtually unusable…There are new and old houses that have no toilet at all…The need is vast.” When contacted a week before my visit after 12 years, Richard’s son, Mandile commented, “You wouldn’t believe that we still use the toilet at home”.

Sipho Kapele – Sweetwaters/KZN South Africa

INSTALLED:
May 2003 at Sipho Kapele’s residence in Sweetwaters Ward 5

REACTION AFTER 3 WEEKS:
“This is the greatest single improvement I’ve ever made to my house… it’s brought contentment to my family… especially my wife and daughter… I’ve already overseen the installation of over 1,000 of these toilets in other areas… the reaction’s always the same… the people love the fact they can use it straight away… it’s made a difference to many lives already.”

12 YEARS LATER:
“It’s working well, sir! I’ve supervised the installation of thousands of these toilets and the outcome’s always the same… people love them because they don’t smell and can be moved if necessary when full… compared to what most people have, they’re simple but great… there’s a pride of ownership.”

Together we can make a difference.
